Piña arrived at around 6:00 p.m. at the corner of Emiliano Zapata and Eduardo Molina streets, together with Natalia Reyes Heroles, general secretary of the Presidency of the Court. From there, she walked with the protesters.
“You are not alone! You are not alone! You are not alone!” shouted the workers of the Judiciary. The minister took photos, raised her arm and continued chanting slogans against the reform.
Piña said this week that the proposed reform of the national justice system will not improve things. “They intend to destroy, without building a better or equal system to the one that has been built in recent years.”
On Tuesday, the justices of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) voted in favor of suspending work to demonstrate alongside workers of the Judicial Branch against the reform proposed by the Government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
During a private session, the suspension received eight votes in favor and three against, hours after Morena and allied deputies approved the reform in general and particular terms.
In a joint statement, Loretta Ortiz, Lenia Batres and Yasmín Esquivel expressed their opposition to the suspension of work. “It is our constitutional responsibility to exercise the office of ministers and provide the public service of administering justice,” they said.
This week, Norma Piña initiated a consultation so that the Court’s Plenum can determine whether or not it can stop the Judicial Reform process that was already approved by the Chamber of Deputies.
Meanwhile, on other battle fronts, judges have already launched a barrage of suspensions against the legislative process, and senators from the PAN, PRI and MC have committed to vote against it next week, which would leave Morena and its allies without a qualified majority.
