The lawyer of the presidential candidate, Edmundo González, spoke with Víctor Amaya on NocheD and explained his situation regarding the arrest warrant issued by the Public Ministry and his subsequent departure from the country.
José Vicente Haro, lawyer for presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, offered details about the status of the candidate of the Unitary Platform with respect to his request for asylum in Spain. Haro said that González’s decision to request political asylum was due to the statements of Attorney General Tarek William Saab on September 5, in which he ratified the arrest warrant for the candidate of the Unitary Platform, issued on September 2.
Edmundo González’s legal representative spoke on Noche D with Víctor Amaya, director of SuchWhich on the occasion of the departure from the country of the opposition candidate with his wife, Mercedes de Gónzalez, on September 7.
“He (the prosecutor) attributed other crimes to him. He even attributed homicide crimes to him, which worsened Edmundo González’s situation because we saw a decision by the Public Prosecutor’s Office to continue with this criminal prosecution and new proceedings,” said Haro.
The lawyer said that under the circumstances, González decided to leave the Dutch Embassy and enter the diplomatic residence of the Spanish Embassy: “not with the aim of requesting asylum, but to stay there and take shelter.”
However, Haro explained that the presence of police officers outside the Argentine embassy on the night of September 6 was one of the reasons that led the opposition leader to request political asylum:
After 10 pm, Edmundo González tells me that he will have to consider this situation (the asylum situation), evaluating the siege of the Argentine embassy and the possibility that it could happen in other residences, even in parallel at the Spanish embassy.
She stressed that González did not make the final decision until September 7 and that when he managed to obtain the safe conduct for his departure from the country, Mercedes de González, the wife of the opposition leader, had only two hours to pack her bags.
José Vicente Haro also spoke about the summons issued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office to Edmundo González. He said that if the opposition presidential candidate had appeared before said body, he could have been taken to a control court “and would be in the Sebin or the Dgcim.”
Regarding his meeting with prosecutor Tarek William Saab, González’s lawyer indicated that he was confirmed that police forces were actively searching for the candidate of the Unitary Platform.

In response to Saab’s statements about a possible publication of the recording of the conversation between him and Haro, Edmundo González’s legal representative said that he would invite the prosecutor to do so: “All the threats he made to me would be evident there.”
He also said that after the conversation between Saab and him, Haro was very careful not to reveal situations that made him fear whether he would be able to leave the Public Prosecutor’s Office in freedom.
That is why I asked the media to stay there from the time I entered the Public Prosecutor’s Office and asked for all possible prudence.
Regarding Edmundo González’s status as political asylum seeker, Haro said that “today, he does not have anything that proves his status as political asylum seeker because certain requirements must be met in Spain.” He added that everything possible is being done to ensure that the process is carried out expeditiously, since in a normal case, asylum could take up to a year to be granted.
“Until I have proof, in accordance with the law, I should not make statements to the media, out of respect for prudence and the Spanish government,” he added.
For the lawyer, the case of Edmundo González before the Public Ministry should be closed completely, as indicated by the Attorney General. Haro added that he personally wants the political prisoners to be freed, but for legal reasons he cannot speak on their behalf, but only on behalf of the person he represents.
