“No more oxygen to the dictatorship!”: the petition of Cuban activists and artists to put an end to Castroism

La Habana, Policía, Dictadura, Cuba

MIAMI, United States. — Cuban human rights activists, artists and independent journalists asked the international community not to lift the sanctions on the Castro dictatorship and once again denounced the repression that the Caribbean island is experiencing.

In the midst of the Havana regime’s campaign against the embargo and other sanctions imposed by the United States, Cuban opponents inside and outside the island warned that any aid received by the military leadership that governs the country will only help perpetuate the suffering of the people.

“We maintain that sanctions are necessary when dealing with a totalitarian regime that has also militarized the economy and imposes the violation of human rights in every commercial negotiation. I wish the world would sanction the dictatorship in a coordinated manner, it would be a concrete and long-term way to help the people of Cuba to get rid of their oppressors”, indicates the petition, published on the platform Change.

The statement maintains that the Cuban dictatorship has “a repressive system that has been perfected for decades and to which they dedicate much of the money that enters the country.”

“The rows of patrols that have been seen in the streets these days show the extreme militarization of Cuban cities and the resources that are allocated to it, which destroys that pitiful image that the regime wants to sell to the world to raise funds” .

Likewise, the activists pointed out that the repression in Cuba is the corruption of the system and its inefficient economic management and the responsibility of the Castro regime and not the embargo, as the communist propaganda tries to sell inside and outside the Island.

“We insist that giving money to the dictatorship right now is highly irresponsible. It is giving resources to a system that cannot even be transparent with the data of the victims generated by its own inefficiency, as happened with the young people killed in the fire at the Matanzas Super Tanker Base.”

The text also rejects “the agenda of those lobbyist organizations that have become misfortune hunters in Cuba, covering up their pro-engagement interests (with specific economic motivations) with supposed humanitarian intentions when they do not even communicate with Cuban civil society organizations. nor do they have among their priorities the denunciation of human rights violations in Cuba.”

The petition, titled For a real change in Cuba: No more oxygen to the dictatorship!was signed by curators Anamely Ramos, Claudia Genlui, Carolina Barrero and Salomé García Bacallao, journalist Camila Acosta, rapper Eliécer Márquez Duany (El Funky), poet Katherine Bisquet, among others.

The CubaSpaces organization and the Cuban-Basque Association Demokrazia Kubarentzat also supported the declaration.
