In Rio de Janeiro, 16.06 million people voted in 92 municipalities this Sunday (6). In 87 cities, mayors were elected in the first round. Only in three, Niterói, Petrópolis and São João de Meriti, voters will return to the polls on October 27th for the second round of elections. Two other cities in the state have an undecided outcome due to sub judice applications.
In Niterói, the dispute will be between former mayor Rodrigo Neves (PDT) and federal deputy Carlos Jordy (PL). In the first round, Neves had 48.47% of the votes (136,064), against 35.59% (99,920) received by Jordy. In third and fourth place were federal deputy Talíria Petrone (PSOL), with 12.65% of the votes (35,498), and Bruno Lessa (Podemos), with 3.14% (8,805). Danielle Bornia (PSTU), Alessandra Marques (PCD) and Guilherme Bussinger (MDB) together totaled 0.15% of the votes (427).
Five candidates competed for the position of mayor in Petrópolis. Councilor Hingo Hammes (PP) won 49.96% of the votes (78,734) and will compete against state deputy Yuri Moura (PSOL) in the second round, who had 17.77% (28,001). The other candidates, Rubens Bomtempo (PSB), Eduardo Blog (Republicans) and Doutor Santoro (Novo), were chosen by 17.23% (27,158), 12.37% (19,496) and 2.66% (4,193) of voters in the municipality respectively.
In São João de Meriti, the decision will be between Leo Vieira (Republicans) and Valdecy da Saúde (PL), supported by the current mayor, Dr. João (DEM). The first received 49.82% of the votes (122,399) and the second 33.01% (81,102) in the first round. Four other candidates ran for mayor: Marcos Muller (PMB) obtained 12.29% of the votes (30,189), Juliana Drummond (PSOL) 3.31% (8,131) and Elvis Silva (Novo) 0.50% (1,223). Fifth place with 1.07% of the votes (2,624), Professor Joziel (DC) had his candidacy annulled sub judice.
In total, 52 cities in the country had the results for mayor postponed to the second round. Of these, 15 are capitals: Aracaju (Sergipe), Belém (Pará), Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais), Campo Grande (Mato Grosso do Sul), Cuiabá (Mato Grosso), Curitiba (Paraná), Fortaleza (Salvador), Goiânia ( Goiás), João Pessoa (Paraíba), Manaus (Amazonas), Natal (Rio Grande do Norte), Palmas (Tocantis), Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul), Porto Velho (Rondônia) and São Paulo (São Paulo).
