“I am going to work and I ask for the support of all Venezuelan society so that we can achieve it.to brotherhood, cooperation and the union of Colombia and Venezuela in a new stageMaduro said in a speech broadcast by the state channel Venezolana de Televisión.

He stated that “a new stage of peaceful relations seems to be opening on the horizon“, and hoped “that the entire Colombian society and the entire Venezuelan society get in tune to the search for economic, commercial, cultural, human cooperation, in the pacification of the 2,200 kilometers of shared border”.

It should be remembered that last Wednesday, Maduro spoke with Petro, who won the elections on Sunday, June 19, about “the willingness to restore normality at the borders, various issues about peace and the prosperous future of both peoples“.
Hours earlier, Petro had reported that he had established contact with the Venezuelan government, without specifying with whom he had communicated, with the purpose of opening the common border and “reestablishing the full exercise of human rights” in this busy border area.

The two countries share a 2,219-kilometer border that has been closed to vehicles since August 2015 by order of Maduro.which had previously expelled thousands of Colombians from that area.
