The administration of Nicolás Maduro, in a statement, expressed its “recognition” to Pope Leo XIV for having formalized the canonization of José Gregorio Hernández and Carmen Rendiles

Nicolás Maduro assured that with the canonization this October 19 of Carmen Rendiles and José Gregorio Hernández “the strength of holiness of the people of Venezuela has been recognized,” and he thanked the late Francisco I for his efforts to achieve the first Venezuelan saints.

From the Dr. José Gregorio Hernández house museum in Caracas, Maduro said that this is “a day of spiritual joy” for the entire country “and beyond our borders because José Gregorio reaches beyond our borders.”

“It is a day where the strength of holiness of the people of Venezuela has been recognized (…) it is a day of vindication of Venezuelanness, of the true spirituality of our people,” expressed the Chavista leader.

He recalled his meeting with Pope Francis in the Vatican in 2013, while indicating that he sent him at least 10 letters through the priest Numa Molina to push the cause of sainthood for Hernández, born in Isnotú (Trujillo).

Regarding the doctor, he described him as the “founder of social medicine” in the country and the rest of Latin America. He also highlighted that the Caracas nun Carmen Rendiles was a “humble, strong and brave woman of spirit to overcome” the physical problems she faced.
