“Nicas Libres Ya”, the campaign that demands the release of political prisoners

International and national human rights organizations promote the campaign “Nicas Free Now” to demand the release of the 190 political prisoners from the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

The platform detailed, in its account Twitterthat “we want this to be a campaign of all the people who demand freedom for the political prisoners in Nicaragua».

As part of the campaign, the organizers installed a billboard in front of the Nicaraguan Embassy in San José, Costa Rica, demanding the unconditional and immediate release of prisoners of conscience who remain imprisoned for opposing the Ortega regime.

The campaign is being promoted by the Institute of Race and Equality, the Nicaragua Never Again Human Rights Collective, the Legal Defense Unit (UDJ), the Autonomous Movement of Women of Nicaragua (MAM), the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (Cenidh ) and the Registration Unit.

In the most recent report of the Mechanism for the Recognition of Political Prisoners, which includes the first to May 31, 2022, the number of hostages of the dictatorship amounted to 190.

To date, in Nicaragua there are 172 men and 18 women political prisoners at the hands of the Ortega dictatorship, including 10 opponents captured prior to 2018.

139 opponents, of the total of 180 detainees in the context of April 2018, are being held in the different centers of the National Penitentiary System, 29 in the Judicial Assistance Directorate (DAJ) known as “El Nuevo Chipote” in Managua. One person is in a municipal police station and 11 are at home in jail.
