Nicas disbursed almost 1,000 cordobas more in 2021 to buy food

Buying basic food in Nicaragua is increasingly expensive. Last December, to acquire the 24 foods included in the basic basket, Nicaraguans had to pay an additional 981 córdobas compared to January 2021.

Only the cost of the food products of the basic basket exceeds 11,096.45 cordobas. In January of last year, cost 10 115.63, say the official data.

But products for home use and clothing, which are also included in the price of the basic basket, maintained an upward trend. In total, the basic basket cost 16,255 córdobas at the end of last year, more than 1,300 córdobas more than in January.

Data from the National Institute of Information and Development (Inide) show that, although the variations are less than in the food section, Nicaraguans paid 3,094.14 cordobas for the purchase of soaps, toothpaste, and personal items in January 2021. December, that number rose to 3,351.20 cordobas.

Similarly, in locker room there was an increase. From 1741.63 córdobas that according to INIDE a Nicaraguan should spend a month to dress in January, by December the cost was already 1807.72.

The 10 products that increased in price the most

All the food products of the basic basket in Nicaragua suffered increases during the year 2021, but 10 of them supposed a greater economic weight for the pockets of the citizens.

The oil had a significant change between January of that year and December. Its price, of 46.51 córdobas per liter, closed at 68.67 córdobas in December, with a variation of 22.16 córdobas, while the second most expensive product was beef posta, which according to INIDE, in December cost 16.2 córdobas more than in January, for a price per pound of 113.35 cordobas.

The price of pork post in January was 71.47 cordobas per pound, while in December it was already at 82.86 cordobas for a variation of 11.39 cordobas, for those who wanted to consume it.

The onions, a product so necessary in the diet of Nicaraguans was not spared from the upward climb. For each pound that was bought, an additional 8.73 córdobas had to be paid in December, when its price reached 40.36 córdobas per pound, while in January the price was 31.63 córdobas.

Another perishable product that rose was the tomato. The pound, which in January 2021 cost 17.68, rose 4.24 córdobas to December to have a price of 21.92, while eggs are 7.64 córdobas more expensive compared to the same period, and in December, the box was priced at 65.78, according to the data of the Inide.

even eat tortilla is now more expensive, according to official data that calculates its consumption per pound. That means that, according to INIDE, a pound of tortilla in January cost 17.03 cordobas, but in December it was already 19.31 cordobas. A variation of 2.28.

Basic basket rose to more than 16,000 cordobas

All these increases in the different categories of the basic basket caused it to rise to 16,255.38 córdobas in December 2021. In January, buying the entire basket, as proposed by the Ortega regime, had a price of 14,951.41 cordobas.

That means that between the period of January 2021 and December of the same year, Nicaraguans had to pay an additional 1,303.97 cordobas to be able to acquire all the products.

And for 2022, at least so far in January, the situation does not seem to improve according to the monitoring carried out by the Ministry of Development, Industry and Commerce (Mific), because according to a propaganda note published in the official El 19 Digital, only 10 products food, of the 24 of the basic basket maintained their prices during this month.

The text omits to mention which were the products that increased in price and does not mention, as it did in previous months, the products that decreased in price, so that at the end of January we could see even more increases in the cost of food. .
