Nicaraguans received almost 400 million dollars in remittances between January and February of this year

Nicaraguans received 396.9 million dollars in family remittances in the first two months of this year, 28.2% more than in the same period of 2021, the Central Bank of Nicaragua (BCN) reported on Tuesday.

In the accumulated to February 2022, Nicaraguans received 87.2 million dollars more than what was received in the first two months of 2021, when they added 309.7 million dollars in remittances, indicated the issuing bank of the State in a monthly report .

Last February, remittances totaled 202.2 million dollars, 31.6% more than the amount received in the same month of 2021 (153.6 million dollars), detailed the monetary entity.

Of the total remittances received in February, 69.2% came from the United States (140 million dollars), followed by Costa Rica with 11.3% (22.8 million dollars), and Spain with 11.1 % (22.5 million dollars), I highlight the BCN.

They are followed, in that order, by Panama with 5.3 million dollars (2.6%), Canada with 2.3 million (1.2%), and El Salvador with 1.4 million (0.7%). , which together with the US, Costa Rica and Spain, represented 96.1% of the total received last month, according to the information.

The sources of remittances from the United States registered a year-on-year growth of 51%, those from El Salvador 40%, and those from Canada and Costa Rica 21.1% and 8.6%, respectively.

Meanwhile, remittances from Spain and Panama decreased year-on-year by 7% and 5.6%, respectively.

Nicaragua received 2,146.9 million dollars in remittances in 2021, 16% more than in 2020, according to official figures.

Remittances represent 17% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

Nicaragua received 1,851.4 million dollars in remittances in 2020, 10% more than in 2019, according to official figures.

The total family remittances received by Nicaraguans during 2019 were 1,682.4 million dollars, in 2018 1,501.2 million dollars, in 2017 1,390.8 million dollars, in 2016 1,264.1 million dollars.

About 20% of the total population of Nicaraguan origin, estimated at 6.6 million inhabitants, lives abroad, mainly in the United States and Costa Rica, and it is estimated that half of them do so undocumented
