Nicaraguans in Miami prepare march in commemoration of four years of civic struggle

Self-convened Nicaraguans in Miami, United States, are calling for a march for Sunday, April 17, under the slogan; “A single April 19, a single voice”, with the aim of bringing a message of support to citizens who resist within the country and reminding the international community that “Nicaragua is not alone.”

One of the organizers of the activity reported that the march will depart from the headquarters of the Miami consulate at two in the afternoon. “For our murdered brothers, for our political prisoners. We are going to take with us the photos of the victims and we are going to carry more than 450 white crosses with the names of our murdered brothers,” said the organizer of Article 66.

«For our brothers who cannot wave their flag and cannot march in the streets, because they cannot express themselves freely, that is why we march here to remind the international community, the local community here in the United States and the entire exile that Nicaragua is not alone,” said Milton González.

The opponent highlights that “Nicaraguans in exile have achieved a lot, two consecutive laws have been achieved, the Nica Act and the Renacer Law, we have achieved multiple sanctions against tyranny and two executive decrees from two consecutive presidents, also achieved condemnations in the United Nations, in the Organization of American States and in the European Parliament. We do not stop working for the people of Nicaragua, we continue in the fight and we are going to continue in the fight until we overthrow the tyranny”, he stated.

The exiles prepare different activities around the world as a way of commemorating and denouncing the human rights violations that the Nicaraguan regime continues to commit. In 2021, the dictatorship imprisoned 68 people, mostly between May and November, as part of an attack against the main opposition political leaders and civil society.

Of this group of referents of the civic struggle in April 2018, the majority were accused of “undermining national integrity” and “propagation of false news”; 54 have been sentenced with sentences of seven to thirteen years in prison.

After four years, the relatives of those killed in the social protests continue to demand justice, but rather they are subjected to siege, harassment and threatened with jail that has forced many into exile.
