The Nicaraguan Human Rights Collective Never Again denounced the “serious violations of fundamental rights and freedoms” by the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo against Nicaraguans who have had to take refuge outside their homeland.

“The Nicaraguan population that is the victim of political persecution, police and parapolice siege, threats against their life, freedom and personal integrity, for which they have been forced to forcibly move and request refuge in other countries due to violence and repression. towards the Nicaraguan population persecuted by the Ortega-Murillo regime,” said the opposition organization.

In commemoration of World Refugee Day, the Collective urged to “foster understanding and empathy towards refugees and displaced persons in consideration of the difficult circumstances in which they find themselves; likewise, the date makes it possible to recognize their capacity for resilience in rebuilding their lives».

There is currently a wave of Nicaraguan migrants heading north in search of the so-called American dream. The Customs and Border Protection (CBP, for its acronym in English), records that between January and May 2022 it detained a total of 72,711 Nicaraguans at its borders; and if compared to the months of January to May 2021 (10,884 arrests), the number of migrants from Nicaragua rose to almost seven times more.

Recently, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, stated that the massive migration of Nicaraguans to Costa Rica and the United States is due to the social, political, economic and human rights crisis that the country has been experiencing since 2018, It is even worse than the one generated by Daniel Ortega himself in the first Sandinista dictatorship.

“In the last eight months, the number of Nicaraguan refugee and asylum seekers in Costa Rica has doubled; reaching the number of 150 thousand. This represents 3% of the population of Costa Rica », he detailed.

“We stand in solidarity with thousands and thousands of refugees, especially with the Nicaraguans who bravely continue in resistance. We join the calls of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights that “calls on States to continue adopting measures to strengthen asylum systems,” details the Collective’s statement.
