The Government of Nicaragua granted Nicaraguan nationality this Friday to the former Taiwanese ambassador in Managua, Chin-Mu Wu, and his wife, Chun-Chiao Wu Liu, a day after breaking diplomatic relations with the island and recognizing the Government of the People’s Republic China.
The nationalization of the former Taiwanese ambassador and his wife was made official through a certification from the Ministry of the Interior, published this Friday, December 10 in La Gaceta, where the Ortega regime indicates that both citizens have “complied with the requirements and formalities established in the laws to acquire Nicaraguan nationality ”.
In the case of former Ambassador Wu, the regime highlights, “he has contributed to the social, economic, technological, educational and cultural development of the country through his management as a diplomat representing the Republic of China, Taiwan in the Republic of Nicaragua ; strengthening international relations, friendship, complementarity and solidarity between both nations ”.
Likewise, Mrs. Wu Liu “has been in the national territory for 14 years without interruption” and has contributed, together with her husband, “to the social, economic, technological, educational and cultural development of the country through its management that he served as a diplomat representing the Republic of China, Taiwan ”.
He finished his diplomatic career in Nicaragua
The former diplomat represented Taiwan in Nicaragua in two periods, the first from 2007 to 2011, which coincided with the return of Daniel Ortega to power, and later from 2017 to 2021. In this second period, Taiwan became the largest cooperator and one of the main commercial partners of Nicaragua.
Chin-Mu Wu concluded his mission in Nicaragua a month before Ortega severed relations with Taiwan. When he said goodbye to his duties as ambassador, he received the José de Marcoleta Order in the Degree of Grand Cross, the highest distinction that Nicaragua grants to a foreign diplomat.
Chin-Mu Wu and his wife were also declared “Distinguished Guests” of Managua, whose mayor, Reyna Rueda, presented them with the “Keys to the City”.
During the tribute, the Taiwanese ambassador said that he was a few days away from finishing not only his diplomatic mission in the country, but also his service career abroad.
The alignment with China
On the eve of the former ambassador’s nationalization, Nicaragua broke relations with Taiwan, recognized China, and reestablished ties with the Asian giant, a decision that the Taiwanese government “deeply” regretted.
During the 1980s, the revolutionary government broke relations with Taiwan and established diplomatic relations with China. However, the international relations of the Sandinista government were aligned around the Soviet Union and the bloc of socialist countries, while Beijing maintained a distant relationship, providing little economic cooperation to the first Ortega government.
But Taiwan’s “long friendship” with Nicaragua can be measured in billions of dollars, which were delivered to Ortega with few conditions even after the Ortega repression and massacre against the citizen rebellion of 2018, which cost several alliances and international support to the regime.
Thus, while the majority of the international community condemned the abuse of power and human rights violations in Nicaragua, the Government of Taiwan remained loyal to the Ortega regime, which today turns its back on it.
Even the ambassador of Taiwan, Jaime Chin Mu-Wu, was regularly seen in the official propaganda media; one day donating homes; another announcing the “good news” of how his country had financed educational infrastructure, or inaugurating maternity homes in rural areas.
