A total of 21 opposition organizations in Nicaragua and in exile addressed a letter to the president of the Organization of American States (OAS), in Washington, DC, in which they demand that the organization not recognize another ambassador imposed by dictator Daniel Ortega.
“Given that the OAS did not recognize the (presidential) elections of November 2021, we request that it also not recognize the accreditation of another ambassador as a representative of the State of Nicaragua,” details the letter from the signatory organizations dated March 24.
Among the sectors of the opposition that signed the document are the Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy (ACJD), the Peasant Movement, the Initiative for Change (IPC), the Blue and White National Unity, the Political Prisoners Reflection Group ( GREX), the Nicaraguan Democratic Force (FDN), among others.

The opponents’ request comes a day after the Nicaraguan ambassador to the regional body, Arturo McFields, denounced the systematic human rights violations that the regime he represented has been committing since 2018.
After McFields’ act of rebellion, this Thursday the Executive annulled the appointment of the now former ambassador to the OAS and instead appointed Francisco Campbell Hooker as the new delegate from Nicaragua.
In the letter, the signatory organizations also requested that an extraordinary session be convened “as soon as possible” to address the issue of Nicaragua “and finally undertake the application of Article 21 of the Inter-American Democratic Charter,” which would mean expelling Nicaragua. Regarding the more than 170 political prisoners locked up in the different prison systems of the country, the opponents demanded that the OAS use all the necessary diplomatic and economic measures to achieve the release of all the hostages of conscience; “Many health sufferers, especially our elderly compatriots, as a result of the physical and psychological torture to which they are subjected.”
They applaud denounce Arturo McFields
The same letter sent to the president of the OAS, states that the signing opposition groups “applaud” the complaint made by the former ambassador, who denounced the crimes and abuses of the Ortega and Murillo regime.
“The Nicaraguan democratic opposition welcomes and values the courage of the Nicaraguan ambassador, Arturo McFields, in his complaint against the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship before the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) in its regular session.”

They reiterated that the Ortega dictatorship continues to choose not to comply with its international commitments, denies its obligations stipulated in the Democratic Charter and the Inter-American Convention on Human Rights, “disobeys the mandates of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and arbitrarily and defiantly decides to withdraw from the the OAS”.

This is an opportunity for the OAS to reaffirm its leadership in defending democratic values in all its member states, and strengthen its role in demanding compliance with the Inter-American Democratic Charter,” he emphasized.
The opponents concluded that one cannot fall into indifference to the suffering of the Nicaraguan people, that of the political prisoners and their families. “You can no longer defend the indefensible.”
