Nicaraguan opposition must accept Sandinista deserters, says Israel Lewites

Political analyst Israel Lewites stated during an interview with the program En Contacto, hosted by journalist Álvaro Navarro, that the strategy of the Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo regime of exiling the opposition leaders has gone quite well, since he knows that the The opposition’s situation is complicated by being in exile and therefore weakens.

«The opposition leaders have suffered extremely hard in exile, after having been kidnapped for two terrible and traumatic years, they have had to go out to make their life, recover their family, for many it is very difficult to support themselves professionally and take the time they the cause is needed,” says Lewites.

Lewites also mentions other elements that have weakened the opposition, the lack of justice in Nicaragua and the extremism that the political world is currently experiencing, which complicates a unification of the opposition that has not yet achieved a consensus. “This motley group, those of us who are against the dictatorship, has to be able to see beyond their differences,” says the opponent.

The Nicaraguan exiled in the United States believes that the opposition must form a solid center-right or center-left bloc, avoiding political extremes. He also affirms that within the opposition there are sectors opposed to Ortega that seek to install another dictatorship and do not seek to democratize the country.

Deserters are an evil that must be accepted

The opponent affirms that for the Sandinistas who are around Ortega and who are afraid, the opposition must create “bridges” by offering dialogue and “good deals” so that instead of working for the regime, they work against it. Lewites believes that the opposition should take advantage of this moment to try to achieve an internal rebellion in the dictatorship.

The gradual undermining of the Sandinista structure is key to avoiding an armed conflict, says Lewites, so deserters from Sandinismo should be allowed to join the opposition ranks; However, those who “stained their hands with blood” must be handed over and prosecuted alongside Ortega’s leadership in the eventual fall of the regime.

«I understand the large sector of the opposition that refuses to accept deserters, but unfortunately in a fight like the one we are facing, not everything will be able to be as we would like and sometimes we have to accept certain evils to avoid a greater evil and evil. greater is to end up as Nicaragua has historically ended: in civil war,” says Lewites.
