Nicaraguan opposition asks the OAS to convene foreign ministers for taking over its headquarters in Managua

The Nicaraguan opposition organization called the Blue and White National Unity (Unab) has asked the Organization of American States (OAS) to convene the ministers of foreign affairs to “react firmly” after the seizure of the organization’s headquarters in Managua last Sunday, April 24.

Héctor Mairena, who makes up this opposition bloc that emerged after the protests against President Daniel Ortega in 2018, told the voice of america that the fact that the ruling party has closed the headquarters of the organization and later declared it to be of public utility “it is barbaric and a behavior that does not observe the minimum international relations”.

“Unab has sent a letter to the OAS because Ortega has not only trampled local agreements, but also international ones. They must act firmly,” said Mairena, who stressed that since 2018 “Nicaraguans have suffered the trampling of the regime, but now this has escalated to the international level.”

“That cannot be avoided by the international community. As Nicaraguans, we tell the OAS to act. We Nicaraguans do not feel represented by that regime”, he has emphasized.

This Friday the president of the Permanent Council of the OAS, Elizabeth Clarke, convened the delegations of said entity for an extraordinary session requested by several countries, within these United States, Brazil, Canada, in order to consider the occupation of the offices In Nicaragua.

“There is great concern about [la] Violation of international law and the Vienna Convention by the Nicaraguan Dictatorship,” commented on Twitter the former diplomat of the government of Daniel Ortega, Arturo McFields, who recently defected denouncing the serious sociopolitical crisis in Managua.

McFields also pointed out that the resolution issued from the extraordinary session will be sent to international organizations and the UN “to alert them about actions of the dictatorship in Nicaragua.”

The administration of President Ortega has been facing a serious sociopolitical crisis since 2018, when demonstrations broke out against him, leaving more than 300 dead.

Ortega said the protests were a coup attempt against him, led by opposition leaders, priests and civil society organizations, according to him.

He also accused international organizations of lying, according to him, inflating figures and disclosing “biased reports.”
