Nicaraguan migrant, uncle of child who died in the Rio Grande, found alive

The Nicaraguan migrant Dervin Ivan Lopez Velasquez40, reported dead while trying to cross the Rio Grande with his sister and nephews, a four-year-old boy and a three-month-old boy, is alive, confirmed the Texas Nicaraguan Community (TNC).

The man, originally from Managua, was able to communicate by phone with his relatives in Nicaragua this Saturday, August 27. “With our hearts in our hands and with thousands of tears spilled, we give honor and glory to God for this great miracle, which has made us deny that he was left for dead, although we also continue with great pain what happened to the children,” published Christopher Velásquez, a relative of Dervin’s wife.

López informed his relatives that he is fine and is under the protection of the United States Immigration authorities. In a short video, the man is seen talking via video call with his relatives, including his children.

The Texas Nicaraguan Community (TNC) organization updated the information on the case, noting that the body that is in custody in the morgue of Memorial, Eagle Pass, and that was confused with Dervin, corresponds to a man not yet identified.

The volunteers reported this week that López Velásquez fell into the river when the boat in which he was traveling overturned in his attempt to cross into the United States, irregularly.

The man was traveling with his sister and two nephews. The four-year-old, who international media also report as a three-year-old boy, lost his life in the Rio Grande; while the three-month-old baby was taken to the hospital in a reserved state.

The organization indicated that the baby had to be disconnected in the hospital, because he suffered brain death. The children’s mother is alive in San Antonio, Texas, United States. “Be aware, please, and don’t take risks,” TNC members advised.
