Nicaraguan journalist Samantha Lugo wins an Emmy award in the US

The Nicaraguan journalist Samantha Lugo Montenegro won the Lone Star Emmy Award 2024 of News and Documentaries by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, one of the most important awards that recognizes the journalistic work of the United States media.

“One night forever… Thank you God, because your ways have always been better than mine. I am an Emmy winner,” Lugo shared along with a photograph with the award he received on the night of this Saturday, November 23 in Texas.

The communicator was nominated for two journalistic works that address the issue of immigrants in the United States and that she carried out together with other reporters. The production “SB4: Between The Law and Fear” addresses the SB4 Law that was approved in Texas months ago and allows state and police agents to detain people under the suspicion that they are undocumented.

In a publication on social networks, Lugo dedicated the award to migrants in the United States and his partner. «Our first Emmy… yes, “OUR”, because before this happy day, there were others with sadness and it was he who encouraged me. And on the most tired nights, it was he who rubbed my back. “Now it’s our turn to celebrate both.”

Lugo, who is originally from Masaya, migrated to the United States in 2019, so she has focused her work on communication to address the migration of Nicaraguans. This Central American country experienced a mass exodus after the repression of the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo against anti-government protests.

Currently, the Nicaraguan journalist works as a producer on the international network Telemundo, in addition to having a podcast on YouTube called Hispanic Conexion, specialized in immigration issues. Lugo was a CNN correspondent in Nicaragua.
