According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), more than 108,000 Nicaraguans left the country between 2018 and 2020, as a result of the sociopolitical crisis that Nicaragua is experiencing. That number could have doubled in 2021, according to the Nicaraguans in the World (NEEM) organization. The nation registered another exodus in the framework of the elections of last November 7, in which Daniel Ortega was installed for one more period in power, in a process whose legitimacy was rejected by the Organization of American States (OAS), the European Union and more than 40 heads of state.
