Nicaraguan Ambassador breaks with Ortega and denounces him to the OAS

The Nicaraguan Ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Arturo McFields, He publicly broke on Wednesday with the government of Daniel Ortega in a surprising way, in a drastic turn after representing Managua before the inter-American organization.

The diplomat used arguments widely used by human rights organizations: censorship of the media, the condition of political prisoners, as well as cancellations by non-governmental organizations.

“I take the floor today on behalf of more than 177 political prisoners and more than 350 people who have lost their lives in my country since 2018, I take the floor on behalf of the thousands of public servants, at all levels , civilians and military, of those who today are forced by the Nicaraguan regime to pretend and fill vacancies and repeat slogans, because if they don’t they lose their jobs,” the diplomat said at a meeting of the OAS Permanent Council.

McFields expressed his fear for the repercussions that his complaint could have, but asserted that he would do so otherwise “the stones themselves will speak.”

Almagro applauds the complaint

The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro applauded the position of the Ambassadorr of Nicaragua and cataloged his position as “ethically correct”.

Since November 2021, Nicaragua has been in a process to leave the OAS after criticizing the Inter-American Charter.

Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Denis Moncada said they would do so because they considered the organization “an interventionist instrument.”

An OAS spokesman confirmed to the voice of america that received the formal request from Nicaragua to cease to be a member of the organization. The process would take 24 months.

US reaction

The interim representative of the United States to the OAS, Ambassador Bradley Freden, acknowledged the diplomat’s decision on his Twitter account.

“We congratulate Ambassador Arturo McFields for his courage in resigning from his position as ambassador of #Nicaragua, denouncing the human rights record of the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship, stating that he could no longer support the regime.”
