Nicaragua Zoo will be administered by the Ortega-Murillo regime

The main zoo in Nicaragua, one of the most visited family destinations in the country, will be administered by the Central Government, after 25 years of being managed by a team of experts, the Friends of the Nicaraguan Zoo Foundation (Fazoonic) reported this Friday. .

More than 1,000 specimens of almost a hundred species that live in the National Zoo of Nicaragua, or “Zoo Nicaragua”, located 16 kilometers southeast of Managua, will pass into the hands of the State as of November, said its director Marina Argüello.

“We have spent all this time taking care of these babies that their mothers rejected until they were independent, crying many times when they could not be saved, suffering when they got sick, and happy when there were new births,” said Argüello, director of Fazoonic, in a farewell video.

The still director of the National Zoo denied that the Government of Daniel Ortega has confiscated the center, and explained that, “for health reasons”, its administration will be handed over to the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Marena).

The chief veterinarian of the Nicaragua Zoo, Eduardo Sacasa, recalled that the center was able to “return several thousand different species of animals to nature, we returned them to their natural habitat, where the hand of man had truncated their freedom.”

This was possible because, in addition to the zoo, the administration managed the Wildlife Rescue Center on the same site, which rehabilitated between 50 and 80 specimens per month, including birds, mammals and reptiles, most of them victims of human attacks.

The Nicaraguan National Zoo, which also has a butterfly farm, successfully reproduced species that are difficult to reproduce in captivity, especially felines, and there were plans to build an aquarium.

Among the species it hosts are African lions, lizards, Bengal tigers, pumas, hippos, ostriches, rangers, iguanas, monkeys, jaguars, tapirs and chimpanzees.

The zoo has a state budget equivalent to more than 400,000 dollars per year, but its maintenance exceeds that amount, so Fazoonic resorted to donations for its maintenance.
