The Government of Nicaragua announced this Tuesday that it will launch the 2023 school year virtually, on the 23rd, when more than 1.8 million students return to school.
“We are going to make a virtual launch, we are going to connect virtually all the centers of the country, from capitals, municipalities, communities, to celebrate this day of national joy, launching the school year full of hope, on Monday 23, from Managua, connected with, or through, virtual systems”, said the vice president, Rosario Murillo, in her daily evening address.
The also first lady did not specify what the inauguration will consist of, but it is the first time that Nicaragua will launch the school year centrally, and it will be broadcast on television.
The setting for the virtual launch of the 2023 school year will be the Rigoberto López Pérez Institute, named after a local hero, and one of the most promoted in Nicaragua since ex-guerrilla Daniel Ortega returned to power in 2007.
Murillo also announced the “Healthy Schools” plan, which aims to promote health and disease prevention in students and teachers throughout Nicaragua.

The plan includes carrying out tests to diagnose and award glasses to students with vision problems, oral hygiene campaigns, blood pressure measurement, detection of hearing and speech problems, follow-up on nutritional deficiencies, application of vitamins , and lice removal.
The Government also plans to offer vaccines against covid-19 in schools, measure chlorine concentrations in the water of study centers, carry out fumigations, train on disease prevention, water and food management, violence prevention or bullying, mental health care, among others.
In Nicaragua it is compulsory to study in the first seven years of schooling, which goes from the third year of preschool to the sixth grade of primary school. This is the least amount in Latin America, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco).
