This Wednesday, the National Assembly of Nicaragua repealed a concession granted to a Chinese businessman to build an interoceanic canal in the Central American country and reformed a law to transfer the megaproject into the hands of the State.
In a plenary session, the 91 deputies of the ruling Sandinista Front and its allies urgently processed a request from President Daniel Ortega to repeal Law 840, which establishes the concession to the company HK Nicaragua Canal Development Investment Co. Limited, based in Hong Kong and owned by Chinese businessman Wang Jing.
On the other hand, Law 800, or “Law of the Legal Regime of the Grand Interoceanic Canal of Nicaragua and the Creation of the Authority of the Grand Interoceanic Canal of Nicaragua”, was reformed.
“The direction of the Authority of the Grand Interoceanic Canal of Nicaragua will be exercised by the Minister of Infrastructure Transportation. The Secretary of the Authority of the Grand Interoceanic Canal of Nicaragua, will be exercised by the Advisor for Investments, Trade and International Cooperation of the Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic of Nicaragua Lauren Ortega“said pro-government deputy Wilfredo Navarro during a session on Wednesday.
The Nicaraguan government alleged the reform and repeal respectively to a supposed “strengthening and updating of the national legal system, taking into consideration the ever-changing national and international environment.”
The pro-government legislators also reformed articles of the law that established a concession agreement and implementation of the megaproject. This work, as announced at the time by the Sandinista government of Daniel Ortega, would be carried out with a total investment of 50,000 million dollars.
The possible construction of the interoceanic canal generated discomfort in sectors of the Nicaraguan peasantry and environmentalists who dozens of protests were called for several years.
“After 11 years of resistance and national and international pressure, the repeal of Law 840 and the Framework Agreement for the Concession of the Interoceanic Canal was achieved.
