Nicaragua Declares Red Alert for Tropical Storm Julia

The Nicaraguan regime declared Red alert throughout the national territory, after damage was reported in several areas of the country, due to the passage of the tropical storm Julia that hit the Caribbean coast early this Sunday, October 9, as a category 1 hurricane.

The National System for the Prevention, Mitigation and Attention of Disasters (Sinapred) reported that, by orientations of the Presidency, and based on the monitoring of the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (Ineter), “it is recommended to take extreme measures and mechanisms of protection to the population during and after the transit of the event”.

Because, “in addition to putting the population at risk, especially the mobilization of students to attend their regular classes, it would add more damage to that caused by the impact of Hurricane Julia on social infrastructure, housing, roads and communications in the Autonomous Region of the South Caribbean, Central Zeleya, Chontales and Boaco».

This declaration of red alert nullifies the state of yellow alert decreed on October 8.

The measure includes that mayors are empowered to take the necessary measures to serve the affected population within their jurisdiction. In addition, Sinapred must immediately execute the response plans in the affected territories.

“Extraordinary measures must be taken in the field of disaster management”, which is why the Disaster Operations Centers in the municipalities will remain in permanent session; Contingency plans will be executed and search, rescue and rescue measures will be implemented for the affected population, as well as transfers to safe places such as churches and schools.

“Medical assistance, damage assessment and determination of needs, the application of assistance plans regardless of the magnitude of the emergency, as well as the measures that may be necessary.”

The personnel of the institutions must prepare themselves for the tasks that the contingent plans imply in the indicated territories. In turn, the availability of the resources of public and private institutions to attend to the emergency must be guaranteed.

Finally, the national authorities recommend that the population “remain calm and be attentive to the information and recommendations issued by the entities that make up Sinapred and its territorial structures.”
