Between January and December 2022 Nicaragua registered a total of 68 victims of femicide and 220 cases in degree of frustration, reveals the latest report from the Voces Observatory, of the feminist organization Catholics for the Right to Decide.
The figures presented by the agency show that of the total number of victims, three of them were between the ages of one and 12. Another seven were adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17, while another 32 were women between the ages of 18 and 34.

As for adult women who were murdered last year, 22 of them were between the ages of 35 and 59 and another three were senior citizens over 60 years of age. In addition, a victim was identified whose age is unknown.
Of all the crimes, Catholics for the Right to Decide indicated that five murderers are under investigation, 11 in legal proceedings, three prosecuted abroad, 20 sentenced, while one of the attackers committed suicide.
The observatory also highlighted that of the total cases of femicide, 21 of them remained in impunity in Nicaragua and six abroad, while a judicial process was suspended.
The body also specified that 28 of the cases are from the public sphere, that is, that the crimes were committed within the home, while 40 were from private spherewhich indicates that the victims were killed in the street or in another place away from home.
Femicides abroad
Regarding the execution of the crimes, the feminist organization recorded that 57 of them were committed in Nicaraguan territory and 11 abroad.

Regarding the relationship between the victim and the aggressor, 15 were romantic partners, 12 ex-partners, one was a boyfriend, nine acquaintances, 15 strangers, eight were relatives, while five were neighbors. It should be noted that 11 femicides were sentenced to life imprisonment in Nicaragua.
Consequences
Among the serious consequences left by the femicides in 2022, the Voices Observatory recorded that 66 girls, boys and adolescents were orphaned. “The need to accompany and protect them, who are normally forgotten, in the midst of the confusion and pain of a femicide, is recognized,” the report recommended.
He adds that sexist violence is present in all parts of the world, for which he affirms that “it is alarming that 11 Nicaraguan women were murdered abroad when they were looking for a better horizon for themselves and their families.”
To prevent more femicides, Catholics for the Right to Decide urged all women and girls victims of sexist violence to denounce. “No more impunity. We demand justice for all, not one less,” they demanded.
The last victim of femicide last year was a 40-year-old woman identified as Ivette de la Concepcion Blanco Mora. The citizen was murdered at the hands of her brother Antonio de Jesus Blanco Moraalias “El Chino”, 44, who had nine days after being released from prison through the presidential pardon of Daniel Ortega, according to official media.
For its part, the Government of Nicaragua has only proposed publishing a primer that “proposes the practice of values and principles that guarantee a harmonious, supportive and dignified relationship” to prevent femicide.
