Nicaragua captured 23.4% more in direct foreign investment, says the Central Bank

Nicaragua captured 1,042.7 million dollars in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the first half of this year, 23.4% more than in the same period of 2021, the Central Bank of the Central American country reported this Sunday.

In accumulated terms, from January to June 2022, gross FDI income totaled 1,042.7 million dollars, which translated into an increase of 23.4% or 197.9 million dollars with respect to what was registered in the same period last year, detailed the issuing bank of the State in a report.

The 1,042.7 million dollars captured in FDI in the first half of this year, represented 13.9% of the gross domestic product (GDP), specified the monetary entity.

In the same period of 2021, gross FDI income (844.8 million dollars) represented 12.5% ​​of GDP, it indicated.

“This increase came mainly from higher income recorded from FDI investment, and disbursements of loans received from related non-resident companies,” explained the Central Bank.

Meanwhile, net FDI flows totaled 812.4 million dollars, which meant an increase of 12.9% compared to the same period in 2021 (719.8 million dollars), according to the report.

The economic sectors with the highest net FDI flows were industry, which received 259.6 million dollars, followed by energy and mining (223.4 million), trade and services (169.9 million), financial (63.1 million ), communications (36.7 million).

Other sectors such as fishing and tourism registered 32.8 and 4 million dollars, respectively.

In terms of the origin of net FDI flows, in the first half of 2022, the United States ranked first with 289 million dollars, representing 35.6% of total net flows received.

In second place was Canada with 129.7 million dollars (16% of the total); followed by Panama, with 123.8 million dollars (15.2% of the total); Mexico with 116.1 million dollars (14.3% of the total), and Spain with 57.4 million dollars (7.1% of the total), according to the report.

The result of FDI flows in the first half of 2022 in Nicaragua was similar to the behavior registered in the rest of the countries of the Central American region, which on average registered a year-on-year growth of 6.2%, highlighted the Central Bank.
