The Government of Nicaragua ordered this week the cancellation of the Telethon, an act of collection of charity funds carried out for more than 25 years in the Central American country in order to attend children with disabilities, they report local media.
The event was scheduled for Thursday, March 6, however in a statement published on social networks, the beneficial organization announced the suspension of the activity alleging “Force Mayor”.
Nicaraguan media reported that the director of Teletón, José Evenor Taboada, would have been summoned to the Ministry of Interior to order his departure from the country in a mandatory way to the United States.
Although the organization did not offer more details about the suspension, the reports indicate that the government of President Daniel Ortega would have canceled the event because the Teletón Foundation did not request permits to collect funds.
The Ortega government has not confirmed the information.
It was expected to collect $ 327,000
The Telethon planned to raise about 12 million córdobas this year, an equivalent of $ 327,000.
Since 2018, after the mass protests against President Daniel Ortega, some 2,000 non -governmental organizations in the country have been closed. Organizations and activists in human rights defense report an increase in repression and censorship of liberties in recent years.
The Telethon Foundation remains registered in Nicaragua as a non -profit organization and has not been dissolved, however, Nicaraguan media reported the presence of police officers in the building that occupies the headquarters of the institution.
