The decision recognizes the decisive contribution of that historical personality to the liberating revolution of the people in the Central American nation, his contribution to the genuinely Christian, fraternal and solidarity foundational foundations and his spirit of dedication to humanity.
The presidential decree recalls his supreme sacrifice at every moment of the struggle for the liberation of the oppressed in his land, until his death on December 11, 1978, in Rivas, and during the insurrectionary war against the dictator Anastasio Somoza Debayle.
The document alludes to the Christmas letter written by the martyr, born in Spain and known as Comandante Martín, on December 25, 1977, in which he announces his willingness to join the clandestine struggle as a soldier of the Sandinista National Liberation Front.
“As an adoptive Nicaraguan that I am, as a priest, I have seen in the flesh the wounds of my people (…), the iniquitous exploitation of the peasant, crushed under the boots of the landowners protected by the National Guard, an instrument of injustice and repression”, the letter refers.
