Six officials of the National Institute of Human Rights (NHRI) went to the headquarters located at Eliodoro Yáñez 832 -which is taken over by social organizations- to collect relevant documents from the Valech Commission.
It should be recalled that on Friday, December 31, a group of representatives of the NHRI’s headquarters met -via telematics- with three councilors of the institution, where they agreed that upon receiving a response from the body, they would allow the withdrawal of the documentation. This in the framework of the taking that began in July 2021 and that this January 8 will be six months old.
The rescued information was taken to the Valech building, located in the same commune of Providencia, and where today the staff of the INDH is working. However, it is expected that part of the papers will be delivered to the Museum of Memory, where all the documents related to the violations of human rights during the dictatorship are located.
Difficult negotiations
Despite the delivery of the information, both parties are not satisfied with the negotiations carried out.
The council indicated that “a rigorous debate began a few weeks ago about the possible classification of crimes against humanity of the set of very serious human rights violations that occurred in the context of the social crisis, an issue that includes, among other elements , the assessment of the systematic nature that the actions that caused such violations may or may not have ”, according to what was stated in the newspaper Third.
In addition, regarding the request for reparation by social organizations, the document indicates that “it is not the responsibility of the NHRI to implement the specific measures and policies in this matter. Without prejudice to the collaboration that we can provide, it is the State and its organizations and institutions that must be in charge of defining and executing them ”.
“It is up to the INDH to demand with all its might that this happens and we have done so by raising the need for a comprehensive reparation policy to which the necessary human and material resources are allocated,” the response added.
In addition to this scenario, the NHRI does not have a specific date for the directors, Yerko Ljubetic, Debbie Guerra Y Branislav Marelic keep up the dialogue. To this is added that from the Ocular Trauma Victims Coordinator and the Coordinating Assembly of Secondary Students (ACES), were not satisfied with the response to their demands, jeopardizing the negotiation.
