NGOs once again demanded respect for digital freedoms in the country

The NGOs Espacio Público and Ipys Venezuela advocated respect for digital freedoms in Venezuela for better access to the internet and to content that is disseminated through the tool. They denounced that the State is preventing from viewing portals and a series of irregularities that violate the right to freedom of information and expression are taking place.


The Press and Society Institute Venezuela (ipys Venezuela) and Espacio Público spoke about the digital freedom of the country on World Internet Day, which was celebrated on Wednesday, May 17, to advocate for better connectivity and the dissemination of information for the disposal of citizens.

Ipys Venezuela, on its internet portal, reiterated its commitment to achieve safe, free and effective internet access for all citizens, due to the fact that for some years they have been monitoring the situation and identifying that pages have been blocked. web, as well as other issues that must be emphasized such as identity theft, internet connection failures, smear campaigns, among other limitations.

In 2022, Ipys documented a total of 27 incidents in the digital environment in 2022, which included blocking of media websites, hacks and other cyberattacks, it reported last March in its annual report.

Of this total, he continued, there were eight cases of arbitrary closure and suspension of social media accounts, selective blocking of web pages (8), denial of service attacks (4), hacking (2), identity theft (2), Internet disclosure of a journalist’s personal information (1), illegal access to a medium or digital support (1) and scams (1).

The director of the NGO, Marianela Balbi, denounced at the beginning of may that more than 7 million Venezuelans find themselves in “informational deserts”, a term that is applied when the citizens of a municipality only have access to one means of communication, or none at all, for information.

For its part, Espacio Público recalled in its report on the situation of freedom of expression in Venezuela during 2022, detailing that failures in the internet service are considered one of the most common violations in the country after registering 74 of these cases. in all the country.

According to this NGO, the main perpetrators in this case were the National Telephone Company of Venezuela (Cantv) and the National Electric Corporation (Corpoelec).

In addition, it reported that 118 cases of violation of freedom of expression are related to online violations; 10% more than in 2021.

The digital observatory VE sin Filtro reported on Tuesday, May 16, that so far this month there have been four new blocks to informative and NGO web pages.

According to the organization, these new blockades are from civil society organizations and media such as El Diario, Observatorio de Finanzas, SalarioDignoVenezuela and Mundo Oriental.
