Brazilian non-governmental organizations issued, this Friday, December 27, a statement in which they urge the Government of President Lula da Silva not to recognize the inauguration of Nicolás Maduro for a new presidential term.
In this sense, the organizations recalled that the UN Human Rights Committee recently announced the opening of a formal process to investigate the alleged fraud in the Venezuelan presidential elections, on July 28.
“Despite strong evidence of electoral fraud identified and documented by international observers, President Nicolás Maduro is moving forward to assume his third term. However, to date the electoral records that prove his victory in this year’s elections have not been presented,” the letter highlighted.
The NGOs stressed the need for Brazil to play an active and committed role in promoting democracy and defending human rights in Latin America, and therefore requested that:
1. Do not recognize the Venezuelan electoral result while the electoral records are preserved, the originals are not presented and verified and until the UN Human Rights Committee rules on the merits of the claim that is under its formal analysis.
2. Provide protection and exit guarantees for Venezuelan political asylum seekers who are in the Argentine embassy in Caracas, under government custody.
Brazilian.
3. Support Venezuelan organized civil society, which faces criminalization and severe repression by the current Venezuelan government.
4. Action for the release of all people arbitrarily detained after the demonstrations due to strong evidence of electoral fraud, guaranteeing their physical integrity and due legal process.
They concluded by saying that in Venezuela there are widespread violations of human rights and lack of respect for the popular will expressed at the polls, “a situation that cannot be normalized or accepted by Brazil, a country that intends to lead an international coalition in defense of democracy, Brazil must act firmly in the face of this scenario of serious political-institutional deterioration and crisis of democracy, public freedoms and human rights in the neighboring country.”
