NGOs ask this Christmas for “miracles of justice, dignity and reconciliation”

Relatives paid tribute to the three political prisoners who died in prison during a vigil

In recent weeks, three political prisoners have died in the dungeons, due to lack of medical assistance, despite the fact that the relatives of the deceased had been asking for treatment for weeks.

This Christmas, organizations such as the Venezuelan Prison Observatory (OVP) or Justice, Encounter and Forgiveness (JEP) wrote letters to ask the Child Jesus for the release of all political prisoners and for a response to the political and social crisis, which includes dignity, reparation and reconciliation.

After the presidential elections of July 28, the Government increased repression against civil society, imprisoning more than 2,400 people. In recent weeks three political prisoners have died in the dungeons, due to lack of medical assistance, despite the fact that the relatives of the deceased had been asking for treatment for weeks.

The situation accelerated the number of releases by the Public Ministry, which counted 956 until the night of December 23, however, at the same time the authorities have continued to detain political leaders, especially from Vente Venezuela, the party of María Corina Machado.

Dear Baby Jesus,

This Christmas, with a heart full of hope, we ask you for a gift for those who need it most: those deprived of liberty in Venezuela.

We ask you to illuminate the path to the liberation of those men and women who have been arbitrarily imprisoned for political reasons, punished for thinking differently, for defending their ideals or for demanding justice. May you soon return to your families, hug your loved ones this Christmas and live in peace.

We also ask for all social prisoners, regardless of their condition, so that they receive dignified and humane treatment. That they have access to food, medicine, drinking water and adequate conditions that respect their integrity. Let torture, isolation and inhuman punishments stop.

We implore you to soften the hearts of those who govern and show them the path of justice and compassion, that the government of Nicolás Maduro grant alternative measures for serving sentences and that pardons be granted to those who deserve it, and that the judiciary act with humanity and commitment, granting precautionary measures to those who face serious health conditions or unfair situations.

This Christmas, more than gifts, we want miracles of justice and reconciliation. May Venezuela be a country where the dignity of each person is respected, where differences are resolved through dialogue and where we can all live free and in peace.

With hope and faith,

The team of the Venezuelan Prisons Observatory.

In a moment as special as Christmas, from Justicia, Encuentro y Perdón we want to send a message full of hope, solidarity and love for all those who face difficulties in Venezuela.

The country suffers pain as a result of human rights violations. Given this, we stand in solidarity with the families of those detained for political reasons, who suffer the anguish and uncertainty of separation from their loved ones. Please know that you are not alone, that we are here to support you in these difficult times and that we will fight tirelessly for you to regain your freedom and obtain reparation.

To the families who have lost a loved one, we send our love in these moments of deep pain. May you find comfort in the love and support of those around you, and may the memory of your loved ones live on in your hearts as a legacy of love and courage.

In the face of suffering and loss, we commit to seeking justice with you and walking the path of forgiveness so that Never again do hate and violence end lives and hopes.

This Christmas may solidarity and compassion be our most powerful resources to build a more just and humane world. May the light of hope shine in every corner and together we can walk towards a future of peace and dignity for all.
