In recent days, a successful transplant was carried out at the JM de los Ríos Hospital for the first time in five years, but for the moment the interventions are approved only in the case of living donors.
The National Transplant Organization of Venezuela (ONTV) reiterated his request for the complete reactivation of the organ and tissue procurement system, as the next step after the restitution of the transplant program at the JM de los Ríos Hospital.
Through a statement published on its Twitter account, the organization celebrated the reactivation of the program, which debuted with a successful operation carried out on wednesday november 30first after five years of paralysis.
Despite the expressions of joy at the reactivation of the program, ONTV specifies that the current operations apply from live to live. That is, the donor must be alive for the operation to be performed. However, they advocate a total reactivation that also allows donors to give up their organs after death.
“We reiterate our request for the reactivation of the organ and tissue procurement system so that, through deceased donor transplantation, the requirements of this child population are met,” they explain.
The organization’s message seeks to alleviate a need for transplants that has plagued JM de los Ríos patients for the last five years, since in this period of time more than 70 children have died while waiting for transplants, according to data from the NGO Prepare Family.
On the other hand, ONTV urged the Ministry of Health and the Venezuelan Social Security Institute (IVSS) to support the program by guaranteeing the “timely and continuous” supply of immunosuppressive drugs, necessary to treat autoimmune diseases, as well as all other inputs required for successful transplant interventions to be carried out.

In June 2017, the Venezuelan Foundation for Organ, Tissue and Cell Donations and Transplants (Fundavene) paralyzed the organ procurement system “temporarily”, arguing that there were failures in care centers, but the suspension that originally it would only last two months, it was extended for five years.
In this context, a debt of more than 10 million euros contracted by the state-owned Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) with the Bone Marrow Transplant Association (ATMO)which harmed the agreement maintained by both entities to administer the bone marrow transplant program.
Now, the reactivation of the program coincides with the signing of an agreement between representatives of Chavismo and the Venezuelan opposition in the dialogue that is taking place in Mexico, through which the release of $3,000 million of the funds frozen in bank accounts was agreed. Venezuela abroad, which will be used for humanitarian purposes under the supervision of multilateral organizations.
