The NGO Justicia, Encuentro y Perdón detailed that 81 political prisoners suffer from serious illnesses, which “aggravates the risks to their physical and mental integrity and demonstrates the systematic nature of human rights violations.”
Justice, Encounter and Forgiveness published this Wednesday the 7th a report on the number of political prisoners in the country. The organization counted 1,011 people detained for political reasons, of which 163 are women and 848 are men.
Of this group of political prisoners, the NGO highlighted that 128 people are in a situation of forced disappearance, which they described as “particularly worrying.” There are also 43 foreigners detained in the country, 48 Venezuelans with dual nationality, 12 human rights defenders, 20 journalists, 20 trade unionists and 201 members of political organizations.
Likewise, it was noted that 81 political prisoners suffer from serious illnesses, which “aggravates the risks to their physical and mental integrity and demonstrates the systematic nature of human rights violations.”
“These conditions reflect discriminatory and selective use of punitive power for political purposes, as well as the implementation of disproportionate coercive measures that seek to neutralize political participation and the defense of fundamental rights,” stated Justicia, Encuentro y Perdón on social networks.
The organization reiterated its call for the authorities to “immediately and unconditionally” release all political prisoners, in addition to guaranteeing the non-repetition of these practices that violate human rights. “These guarantees must include full respect for due process, protection against forced disappearance and the implementation of institutional mechanisms that prevent the criminalization of political dissidence.”
