Tapachula, Chis., Systematically, many of the migrants who are taken to migratory stations such as Siglo XXI, located in Tapachula, Chiapas, suffer torture with actions such as leaving them without food, without services or receiving constant teasing and harassment.

Those who dare to denounce are sent to a dark and small room where they remain isolated and without food, said Guillermo Naranjo, coordinator of comprehensive defense of the Fray Matías de Córdova Human Rights Center (CDH Fray Matías).

For his part, Enrique Vidal, coordinator of that organization, considered that the confrontations between migrants and police recorded in recent weeks could be caused to promote a climate of animosity and rejection that justifies the militarization of the southern part of the country.

He explained that part of the delay in the processing of requests for permits for humanitarian reasons is due to the setting up of an Internet dating system with the National Migration Institute (INM), which it has been a resounding failuresince in addition to constantly collapsing it leaves out those who do not have a recent cell phone, as well as access to the network.

This year alone, the organization has collected hundreds of complaints about irregularities at the immigration station in this city. If those from 2021 are included, they add up to thousands of cases, Naranjo added.

The lawyer of the CDH Fray Matías explained that due to the number of complaints received, it is possible to speak of a campaign that seeks to criminalize and stigmatize migration and generates an adverse environment to denounce attacks on their rights, for which they prepare a collective complaint.

annoyance of authorities

People who present amparos in the face of the lack of response from the immigration authorities they are subjected to constant cruel treatment, such as those who deny them food. The authorities are very bothered (they present legal remedies), so they restrict food, water and basic services.

He argued that this is intended to inhibit any accusation against the authority, added to the fact that they do not clearly explain what their rights are.

they tell them that the fact of requesting asylum makes it difficult for them to leave, that it is not convenient to speak with human rights, either with the organizations that we are going to monitor or with the CNDH itself.

He stressed that if someone dares to complain about a situation inside the migratory station, it is very common that they are kept in spaces that are a dark room, reduced, they are not allowed to leave. If they mention their existence, they are prone to being denied food and are constantly being harassed.

Another reported practice is that agents prevent migrants from contacting their lawyers or defense organizations. We go to the stations to see a person and they tell us that he is not there or that he does not come to the call, when in reality they never send for him. Migrants often have the perception that they have already been abandoned or that there are no ones following up on their cases and they end up desperate.

Agents also tend to call migrants at the station to tell them they already came to visit you, although it is not true. People go and expect to meet their representatives, they don’t find them, they make fun of them, and then after two hours they call them back; they keep them that way for long periods.

These actions undermine trust in any information that reaches them that is not from the INM itself, concluded the litigant.
