Nexa Resources Peru reported on Thursday that it has temporarily suspended production at the San Gerardo open pit of the Atacocha mine (pasco), due to the blocking of a road by a community.
This measure is added to the operations of Las Bambas (which only today reached a truce agreement with the community to free the mining corridor) and also Southern Copper (Moquegua), which had to paralyze its copper operations in Cuajone and later in Toquepala. .
Through a statement, Nexa mentioned that the Machcan community illegally blocked the access road to the mine with protest activities.
“And, although there has been no material impact on production at Atacocha to date, the mine has been suspended and activities are limited to critical operations with minimal labor to ensure proper maintenance.”, he specified.
Nexa added that she continues to seek an active dialogue with the local community and the authorities for a peaceful resolution of this situation.
The mining company also assured that its production for this year will not be affected by the blockade and suspension of its activities.
“On a weekly basis, Atacocha produces approximately 0.2kt of zinc, which represents less than 3% of Nexa’s zinc production”, he referred.
Let us remember that the mining unit, which produces zinc, gold and copper concentrates, also suspended its operations in December of last year due to blockages on the road, but resumed its work in January.
