The New Year’s Eve party is expected to generate R$3.2 billion in the economy of the city of Rio de Janeiro, with the expectation that 5 million people will participate in the events, according to study released this Sunday (29) by the city hall.
According to Mayor Eduardo Paes, the public can expect new features in this year’s attractions. “This document shows that this great party does not just generate fun. It attracts many tourists and has an economic impact of R$3.2 billion. It’s more work and income for Rio. It’s also more joy,” he said.
One of the new features is the return of the Leme Stage, which will feature performances by gospel music artists, and the debut of the Parque Oeste Stages, in Inhoaíba and Parque Realengo. These two public spaces were opened this year.
Copacabana
In Copacabana, in the south of the capital, there will be shows and fireworks. The expectation is to welcome 2.5 million people, including locals and tourists, to the second biggest event in the city, behind only Carnival.
The main stage, on Copacabana Beach, in front of the Hotel Belmond Copacabana Palace, promises to have a large concentration of audiences to watch the singers’ shows Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, Ivete Sangalo and Anitta.
The president of Riotur, Patrick Corrêa, highlighted that the projection is to exceed the R$42 million collected in Service Tax (ISS) from tourism and events during 2024, which “represented a growth of 66.3% compared to 2022 and more than double pre-pandemic numbers in 2019.”
According to calculations in the second edition of the study New Year’s Eve in Dataaround 50 thousand jobs should be generated, directly or indirectly, by the New Year’s Eve party.
“With the economy booming, Rio people have more opportunities and better income. We had a special 2024, with great shows and events, and we are going to start a new year that is also promising”, said the acting municipal secretary of Urban and Economic Development, Thiago Dias, in a statement released by the city hall.
The majority of foreign tourists come from Argentina, followed by Chile and the United States. Among the states of Brazil, São Paulo and Minas Gerais lead the ranking.
According to the study, previous surveys indicated the satisfaction of tourists visiting Rio. “A total of 83% of people who responded to the questionnaire gave the city ratings of 8 or more. For 84% of people, the feeling of security is positive (excellent or good); and the evaluation is positive about the shows (90%) and fireworks (83%)”, informed the city hall.
Operation
The city hall’s operational scheme for holding the New Year’s party involves 11 bodies and 8,400 employees. Only COMLURB, responsible for urban cleaning, approximately 60% of employees will work. The planning also includes more than 7 thousand municipal vehicles and equipment.
