Creativity in choosing names has no limits in Peru, and that includes those inspired by the end of the year festivities. According to the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec), some people have names that reflect the most characteristic traditions and customs of this time.
Among the most curious names are New Year’s Eve, Toast and Yellow, which allude to the year-end celebrations.
In a recent report, Reniec revealed that, although there are no restrictions on registering names in the country, there are several denominations associated with the holiday. Only one Peruvian citizen bears the name Año Nuevo, while Brindis is the most common of these names, with a total of 104 records in the country.
Other names alluding to the New Year’s Eve tradition include Cena, with 288 people registered, and Uva, with 52 citizens with this name, in reference to the popular custom of eating twelve grapes to attract good luck in the new year.
In addition to these, Reniec reported that 33 people carry the name Próspero, while 18 have been registered as Nuevo, names that refer to good expectations for the future. Names like Deseo and Tono, with only five registrations each, also reflect the desires for a prosperous start to the year. On the other hand, Yellow and Prosperity are less common, with only two people recorded under each of these names.
Finally, some more unique denominations include Ritual and Holiday, which have a single registration each, standing out for their originality.
Reniec also clarified that to modify personal data in the National Identity Document (DNI), such as names or surnames, it is necessary to process a new document, according to the records of the applicant’s birth certificate.
