New technologies will radically change the job market, economist warns

Nuevas tecnologías cambiarán radicalmente el mercado de trabajo, advierte economista

Economist and Harvard professor, Juan Ariel Jimenez, He spoke about the major changes that the job market will undergo as a result of new technologies, including artificial intelligence, robots and specialized programs, which will require a new approach to the educational system that will focus more on critical and analytical thinking.

“Teaching people to think is the key to today’s and tomorrow’s work, as this would allow people to constantly adapt to the new work environment.”Jiménez said during the conference given at the Technological University of the Eastern Cibao (UTECO), “The future of work at the microeconomic level.”

Citing studies by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the World Economic Forum, Professor Juan Ariel Jiménez said that many jobs will disappear in the future, new jobs will be created, and most will continue to exist but perform different tasks, something that has already been observed in the past.

“Many jobs that exist today and that generate good pay did not exist twenty years ago. Positions such as community managers or cybersecurity managers are new opportunities that have opened up in recent years, but those who take advantage of them are those who have been able to make the leap towards new technologies, something that is key to success in the future,” said Jiménez.

In this regard, Jiménez pointed out that new technologies, although some may possibly replace humans, the vast majority are tools that can be used as allies to improve processes and reduce time.

“Artificial intelligence needs clear and precise instructions from humans to be able to provide support in different areas, so the great challenge will continue to be for professionals to have the ability to think, because this skill is timeless,” he said.

After the conference, the former Minister of Economy was recognized by the Mayor of Cotuí as a distinguished visitor of the municipality, and was recognized by the Technological University of Cibao Orienta (UTECO) for his professional success at an international level. The distinction on behalf of the university was made by the rector, engineer Marilyn Diaz, while the Council of Aldermen of the Mayor’s Office was represented by councilors Persio Sánchez and Leonel Vicioso.
