Below are the regulations that determine the modifications not permitted on motorcycles:
Law 769 of 2002, which establishes the National Land Traffic Code, includes several articles referring to motorcycle modifications.
Article 49 establishes that any change to the body of a vehicle, whether in appearance or length, must be authorized by the traffic authorities and registered in the National Automotive Registry. The identifying characteristics of a motor vehicle cannot be modified without prior authorization and must be registered in the National Automotive Registry.
It is prohibited to alter the identification numbers of the engine, chassis or vehicle series, as well as to retouch or modify the license plates, under penalty of sanctions.
Article 86 prohibits any alteration to the motorcycle’s lights, including changing their colour or installing strobe lights or similar police lights, as well as placing lights on the rear of the vehicle.
When do the regulations start?
From November 2024, motorcycle tiress will have to meet stricter standards. Importers and assemblers will have to ensure that tires are certified and have passed rigorous tests to ensure better traction and safer braking.
In addition, from the end of 2025, ABS or CBS braking systems will be implemented, which will vary depending on the engine capacity of the new motorcycles.
These systems will provide improved performance in hard braking situations, benefiting even less experienced drivers.
These measures will be supervised by the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce, and future buyers will have the right to demand compliance with these new regulations.
Penalties for non-compliance with these regulations include fines of up to eight times the current daily legal minimum wage, in the case of alterations to the identification numbers of the engine, chassis or vehicle serial number.
