New massacre denounced in Cauca, Colombia

A family made up of a married couple and their 19-year-old son was annihilated by an armed group on Thursday night in the Buenos Aires municipality, department of Cauca, Colombia, according to reports from the Institute for Development and Peace (Indepaz).

In the shooting, which took place in the rural area of the municipality, a 10-year-old girl was also injured, according to the secretary of the municipal government, Diego Armando Carabalí, who confirmed the murders.

This massacre is added to the recent murders of other indigenous youth and a leader of the Guard of native peoples, which occurred in previous days and perpetrated by armed groups that circulate in these remote areas of Cauca, according to Indepaz.

Indepaz denounces that this massacre occurs even though it had issued what it called an Early Warning, AT 019/2020, which described the municipality of Buenos Aires as a functional territory for the armed conflict as it is a mobility corridor for illegal groups.

Meanwhile, the Ombudsman’s Office reiterated what it called its total rejection of these events, and reiterated to the authorities their obligation to take the necessary measures to control the situation of violence experienced by the inhabitants of the municipalities and guarantee them the protection of their human rights.

In short, Indepaz added that with this there are 12 massacres perpetrated by armed groups so far in 2022.
