Recently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairsthrough resolution 12880 of December 12, 2024, a modification was made to article 15 of resolution 6888 of 2021, in order to change some requirements for minors.
Who should no longer renew their passport in Colombia?
Starting December 13, 2024, Minors will no longer need to renew their passport when obtaining their identity card or upon reaching the age of majority.
This provision is established by the Resolution 12880 of the Ministry of Foreign Affairswhich modifies article 15 of Resolution 6888 of 2021. Previously, the minors had to update their passport when they turned seven years old or when they reached of agedue to the change in your identification number when obtaining the ID.
The reform is based on the Unique Personal Identification Number (NUIP), implemented in 2004 by the National Registry of Civil Status. This unique number is assigned to minors upon registration and remains the same throughout their lives, being valid for both identity card as for the citizenship card. Therefore, it will no longer be necessary to update the passport upon reaching the age of seven or reaching the age of majority, since the NUIP does not change.

With this modification, the objective is speed up and facilitate the process of obtaining a passport, offering easier access to this document. The Chancellery has indicated that citizens will be able to carry out the procedure at its two main offices, as well as at the CADES and SuperCADES of Bogotáand in the headquarters of the country’s governorates.
