With 83.8% of the votes (11 thousand), Governor Edison Lobão’s electorate approved the change of the city’s name to Ribeirãozinho do Maranhão.

The voters of Dois Lajeados (RS) did not approve the construction of the municipality’s new administrative center in the João de Pizzo Municipal Events Park area. The negative was due to the contrary expression of 81.4% of the electorate (2.2 thousand votes).

The second round of the mayoral race will be held on October 27 in 50 municipalities with more than 200,000 voters.

In these cities, none of the candidates for mayor received more than half of the valid votes, excluding blank and invalid votes, in the first round.

There is no second round for the race for the City Council.

Referendum x Plebiscite

The capital of Maranhão and the municipalities of Governador Edison Lobão (MA), São Luiz (RR) and Dois Lajeados (RS) held plebiscites. In Belo Horizonte a referendum took place.

Referendums and plebiscites are two types of popular consultations. In the plebiscite, the population is consulted before implementing a law on the topic under discussion. With the referendum, the electorate can confirm or reject a law approved by the Legislature.
