New fintechs must pay attention to the law: Prestadero

Within the framework of its 11th anniversary, the crowdfunding platform Prestadero highlighted that the scenario for financial technologies has changed since the founding of fintech, also emphasizing that new players must pay more attention to the regulatory framework before starting operations.

“With the regulation it is very different, the recommendation for new entrepreneurs is not to launch your product without learning about the legal issue, because raising resources illegally is a criminal offense and you can end up in jail,” said Gerardo Obregón, founder and CEO of Prestadero.

Gerardo Obregón said that forming a collective financing institution, under the Law to Regulate Financial Technology Institutions or Fintech Law, requires more planning and more structured capital, adding that having regulation is a benefit for companies, essentially because provides certainty to customers.

“Focus your company on a financing model, on your innovation, but always make sure that you are going to have the authorization of the corresponding authorities,” Obregón commented.

Prestadero obtained its authorization ten years after its foundation, on June 23, 2021, to operate as a collective financing institution, by the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV) together with the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit and the Bank of Mexico.

“It was a challenge because we were not doing anything in the company, other than preparing, all the paperwork and processes; Our team worked on the structure so that they would grant us the authorization and in addition to that we were still in operation”, said the director of Prestadero.

Transparency key to success

The platform stated that transparency in its products and responsible use of information was key to the success of its operations. They highlighted that their main contribution to the sector is their annual report “What do Mexicans request credit for?”

“All the efforts we make are based on transparency, this study and in the projects we launch, we believe that with fair products and information, people will reach the sector,” Obregón argued.

Prestadero celebrates 11 years with more than 500,000 registered users; more than 660 million pesos released in loans, ranging from 10,000 to 300,000 pesos.
