The independent platforms for the rights of women in Cuba did not offer details of the deceased, so far her age and other information about her and her family are unknown, as well as the circumstances and motive for the attack.

Alas Tensas and Yo Sí Te Creo in Cuba used their publications to send condolences “to her relatives and, especially, to the two surviving children,” and once again drew attention to the need to create shelters and protection systems. for women and their descendants in situations of violence.

“Families do not have the tools or security systems that shelter networks have. This situation also exposes family members, who are usually injured and even die for defending the assaulted woman,” said both organizations.

“Each day that passes in Cuba without an appropriate system to confront gender violence turns the Cuban State and society into femicides, because they do not act, because they do not protect or create the essential mechanisms for women at risk of femicide,” reads the publication. shared.

This is the first femicide to have occurred in Cuba during the month of April, but the eighth since January 1, 2022. There could be more cases, but independent organizations do not have access to official statistics.

Last March three women were murdered on the island, in the provinces of Havana, Matanzas and Las Tunas. In February a young woman died at the hands of a man who harassed her and whose case the police already knew about. In January three women victims of gender violence were murdered in Villa Clara, Camagüey and Guantánamo.

During 2021, according to a report published by the Gender Violence Observatory of the magazine Alas Tensas, at least 36 women died in Cuba as a result of sexist violence.
