The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a decree that makes it easier for citizens to obtain their passport through an online process. Although the rule has not yet been officially signed, the procedure is now available on the Foreign Ministry’s website.

With this new measure, users will be able to request their appointment through the Ministry’s website and They will only have to appear at the corresponding headquarters to carry out the biometric verification at the time of collecting their document.

Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo stressed that This initiative seeks to simplify access to an essential document for Colombians. In order to apply for the Colombian passport online, interested parties must meet the following conditions.
Be of age. Besides, be the holder of a current ordinary electronic or executive electronic passport, issued after November 17, 2017; have successfully completed biometric authentication in the previous passport issuance process.

Additionally, they assure that another option is to request a passport for any of the following reasons:
– Voluntary change.
-Damage that prevents its use.
– Exhaustion of the pages of the current passport or insufficiency of the remaining ones.
– Theft or loss.
Applicants must complete an online application form and meet specific photography requirements. This must be 4×5 cm in size, be in color and taken within the last six months. Additionally, the face must appear in the foreground, looking directly at the camera with a neutral expression, on a white background and without any accessories that hide the face. If the applicant uses glasses, they must be transparent and not reflect light.

Passport delivery process
The delivery of the new passport will be done in person. Users must present their previous valid passport, as well as a valid identification document in good condition.except in cases of theft or loss. Delivery will take place at one of the two issuing offices in Bogotá (Northern Headquarters and Central Headquarters) chosen by the applicant, and, as a pilot project, at the Consulate General in Hong Kong.

“The ordinary electronic and electronic executive passports requested online will be delivered in person to the holder, through biometric validation at the office selected at the time of completing the application.”, explained Foreign Minister Murillo.
This modernization of the process not only seeks to speed up obtaining the passport, but also to make the handling of procedures in the country more efficient. Interested citizens can access the full decree and more details through the Chancellery website.
