New constituent process: senators propose that councilor elections be held on May 7

The Senate Constitution Committee discussed on Tuesday the reform project that enables a new constituent process. In this context, legislators entered indications; One of them proposes that the elections of the councilors – who will integrate the Constitutional Council – be held on May 7.

The project contemplates that the elections will be held on May 14. However, that date coincides with Mother’s Day. In this regard, the President of the Senate, alvaro elizalde (PS), reported that parliamentarians -of the parties that entered the agreement-, entered the indication that seeks to change those elections to May 7.

The modification would cause the Constitutional Council to begin its work on June 7 and not on the 19th of the same month, as was considered in the project.

For the change to be effective, Congress should approve the constitutional reform project in the first days of January.

However, for the president of the board of directors of the Electoral Service (Servel), Andres Taglethat date “continues to be dangerous” because in the same reform it considers that the closing of the electoral registry is the 120th day before the election, that is, January 7.

“We believe that it is unlikely that this reform will be processed next week. We are concerned that there will be a term incompatibility and that means that the 120 days must be reduced,” Tagle said.
