New cases of monkeypox identified in Colombia

Three new cases of monkeypox were confirmed in the country, which were registered in Bogotá after obtaining the results by laboratory.

To the date, 10 Colombians have contracted this disease, of which 9 have been identified in the capital and one of them in Medellín, according to information from the National Institute of Health (INS).

All the cases that have been registered in the country are male. and eight of the 10 reported cases have a history of international travel to Europe or the United States. The authorities have been able to establish that the two remaining cases correspond to contacts of travelers from the aforementioned territories.

The previous week the infection of a person was also confirmed that he was under follow-up, taking into account that he is a close contact of the last confirmed case in the country’s capital (on July 8).

Likewise, the district health authorities have said that all measures are being taken to avoid chains of contagion. Through the Ministry of Health, the respective epidemiological investigations and epidemiological fences, in order to mitigate the risk of community transmission.

It is worth mentioning that of the 10 cases registered in the country, five have already completed their follow-up with complete recovery and no new cases were generated in his contacts; the other five continue to be followed up along with their contacts.

Given this scenario, the Secretary of Health of Bogotá in charge, Iliana Curiel, stated that if a person was in contact with another who presents symptoms of the disease, they must remain calm and consult the information available on the website and go to the competent health authorities.

“Bogotá does not lower its guard, we continue to maintain public health surveillance for this public health event and other health events,” the official concluded.

For its part, the director of the INS, Martha Ospina, reiterated that “monkeypox is not a new disease. Over the years, outbreaks have occurred mainly in Africa, in endemic countries, but there have also been outbreaks outside of Africa, such as in the United States a few years ago.“.
