New attempt at fuel subsidies will be today

The first was set for yesterday Thursday at 1:00 p.m. However, it did not have a quorum, considering that the official caucus of the Lower House requested it just an hour before.

Ángel Paniagua, pro-government deputy and vice president of the Lower House, affirmed that two Liberals failed to keep their promise to be present. At 1:30 p.m., the lack of a quorum was declared with 40 registered deputies, considering that 41 were needed.

The first call for an extraordinary session in principle was set for next Monday, April 11, however, Pedro Alliana, president of the Lower House, advanced it to today, Friday, at 7:00 in the morning. Here, the ruling party will have a new opportunity to approve the questioned bill.

JUSTICE
Walter Harms, national deputy for the ANR (Honor Colorado), said that the bill must be approved because it will bring justice and benefits for all.
“The first fund for Petropar was not fair because it privileged one sector. This will give fairness. Now yes, all Paraguayans will benefit from this measure, ”he assured.

This is the block posture that the “Honor Colorado” movement will take for tomorrow. The group is made up of 25 legislators.

AGAINST
Celso Kennedy, national deputy for the PLRA, affirmed that today’s call for siesta was carried out in a very disorderly manner. He announced that it is very likely that today’s session will not have a quorum again.

“In the PLRA, the majority does not want to approve. Of course I disagree,” she expressed.

CONTEXT
Last Tuesday, a few hours before the Copa Libertadores superclassic, the Senate convened an extraordinary session where it approved the bill “That creates the price stabilization fund for fuels derived from petroleum.” The document basically establishes an international loan of US$ 100 million to subsidize the prices of diesel/gasoil type III C and virgin naphtha.

This arises as a reaction to the bill that was enacted by the Executive on March 25. It established a series of redirections in order to pay for an exclusive subsidy for the state oil company Petropar. Considering that the war between Russia and Ukraine had generated a spike in the prices of oil barrels.

The money to subsidize fuel imports will come from a loan that the Paraguayan State will make from the Andean Development Cooperation (CAF).
