Due to an increase in seismic activity, in the central mountain range of Colombia, the Colombian Geological Service reported that the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, located in the Department of Tolima, could erupt, for which reason it went from Yellow Alert to Orange.

The authorities explained that this alert is given so that the authorities are prepared, however the eruption is not imminent. “Although the orange level represents a possible eruption of considerable magnitude, which could occur in a matter of days or weeks, this is not imminent. It is only a probability against which the authorities must be prepared, “they stated.

They added that if it erupted this would be the largest in the last decade.

The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management has already activated risk management councils in the departments of Tolima, Caldas, Risaralda, Quindío and Cundinamarca.

It is important to clarify that the Nevado del Ruiz volcano has been in constant eruptive activity for the last 10 years. However, these events have been minor, mainly with ash fall, the last eruption of this volcano was recorded in 2016.
