Nevado del Ruiz has been having ash expulsion, low intensity earthquakes but on March 29, the strongest occurred since it has been monitoring 36 years ago.
News Colombia.
The Nevado del Ruiz is a volcano that has been “in eruption for approximately 10 years, but all the eruptions in this period have been minor and its affectation is limited to the fall of ash in different places”, they warned in February 2023, this March 30, the orange alert was turned on.
Risk Management reported that “the risk management committees of 5 departments are activated: Tolima, Caldas, Risaralda, Quindío and Cundinamarca.”
Nevado del Ruiz with more intensity
A few hours ago, it went from yellow alert to orange, “this level indicates that in days or weeks the Nevado del Ruiz volcano could erupt a major eruption to those it has done in the last decade.”
What set alarm bells ringing was the comprehensive evaluation of the parameters monitored by
the SGC, and the seismic events registered during the last days, “located at a distance from the crater between 2 and 5 kilometers with depths between 2 and 4 kilometers from the top”.
It had an increase in activity and on March 29, there were more earthquakes than in the entire history of monitoring since 1985.
The general director of the UNGRD, Javier Pava Sánchez, calls on the government authorities, “the necessary preventive actions can be taken to
timely manner.”
“We request the departmental and municipal risk management councils
within the area of influence, intensify actions to prepare for the
response,” he said.
They must intensify aspects “such as verification and adaptation of evacuation routes,
meeting points, as well as updating territorial response strategies”.

Although the emissions from the Volcano are intermittent, they always generate an alarm in the population, for example, for the month of August of the year 2022, a column of ash was expelled by the Nevado del Ruiz, this exceeded 3,000 thousand meters.
One of the 25 volcanoes in the country
The Nevado del Ruiz volcano is one of the 25 active and monitored volcanoes in
Colombia.
- Located at 5,321 masl above the Central Cordillera of Colombia, on the border
between the departments of Tolima and Caldas. - After the Armero tragedy, which occurred in 1985, it has priority monitoring.
